Project Architect: Mr. Prajol Hada
Project: Bira Complex
Site Location: Pyukha, New Road, Kathmandu
Construction Date: 2006
This commercial complex is built in Pyukha, New Road
in the heart of Kathmandu city. Planning the project it took a whole
site area as to maximize the use of land which is irregular in shape.
As core area of the city, the design of the complex was only to be focused
in the façade and the construction work was difficult as working
space area had to remain so limited.
One of the challenges was also to keep the building design and construction
so careful by not hampering or troubling the parallel located heritage
site of Buddhist Stupa currently in renovation.
As to the imagination and implementation of design by the architect
the open circle inside of hanging box at the left top of the building
represents a center of city which is intersected by a plane rectangle
box as a train passing through defines a new trend introduced in a city.
The design and the workmanship of curved aluminum windows is to be appreciated
as it represent the development of new architectural era and technology
in Nepal.
As a whole, the circle, the arch shape and the curve gives the building
facade a unique blend and a total architectural composition to a development
of a modern architecture in Nepal. Another part reflecting the good
façade is the perfect color combination of the elements to the
building.
Having this modern complex and the heritage site next to each other
symbolizes a new era of setting an example of Nepalese Architects in
steps of preservation and modernization of architecture in Nepal. This
place definitely becomes an architectural site to keep our eyes on.
